Progress 01:13
2.
Atrophy 05:12
"The only thing we can be sure about the future is that it will be absolutely fantastic." The Unison: All of our needs are seen to Death is defeated Boredom’s the only burden Of eternal life The Interventionists: On and on our legacy will go Societal stagnation is our greatest foe The Unison: Now we lament the waning novelty Now we endure this growing atrophy The Naturalists: Why can’t we just enjoy this endless revelry? This is the heaven that our ancestors would seek The Unison: Never wanting Ever dreaming No more progress All is spoken The Interventionists: No way - this can’t be all there is to life All that can be Such arrogance to assume we know all there is Knowing is power Power is hunger On and on our legacy will go Societal stagnation is our greatest foe The Unison: Now we lament the waning novelty Now we endure this growing atrophy The Chaos: This is my day to grow There’s discord to be sewn The Interventionists: Explore! The Naturalists: Let’s leave it be The Interventionists: Conquer! The Naturalists: Nothing to see The Interventionists: Expose! The Naturalists: This ecstasy The Interventionists: Convert! The Naturalists: Is all we need The Interventionists: Why would we ever let those who are less suffer Knowing is power Power is hunger
3.
The Unison: Some remember when Our time was limited The last of us to die Were the last to feel pain The Interventionists: Yet we suffer still Even when want is gone Existential dread No one is proven right The Naturalists: Just be proud of what we have The Interventionists: And that is? The Naturalists: The city upon the hill The Interventionists: But so what? The Naturalists: There’s no reason to complain The Interventionists: Why bother? The Naturalists: Would you bring back misery? The Interventionists: It’s pointless The Chaos: Close your eyes See your end Is it as you envisioned? Do you really see beyond the vessel of the mind? The Unison: Confined to consciousness There’s no evidence for more This is really it Maybe it will come again The Naturalists: Someday our faith will prevail The Interventionists: Don’t think so The Naturalists: It’s a shame you can’t believe The Interventionists: We aren’t blind The Naturalists: You’ll find yourselves crawling back The Interventionists: That’s doubtful The Naturalists: Just give in to your feelings The Interventionists: Don’t tempt us The Chaos: On the edge Of a cliff I can see you want to fall I can make that final push Just give me control The Unison: Tossing and turning Can’t shake it from my mind What happens after? What is left behind? The Chaos: Open minds bring the end Of a worthless legacy I, Alpha and Omega, come to seal your fate The Chaos/the Unison: Unity can’t be forced There is no infinity Only cycles of chaos Against piety The Unison: Confined to consciousness There’s no evidence for more This is really it The vessel of the mind
4.
The Rift 04:53
The Unison: When we traveled out to the stars We found others like us Sentient, thinking, lacking our means How, then, should we proceed? The Interventionists: We could intervene on their behalf It’s only right The Naturalists: But no one was there to help us on the way The Interventionists: We're responsible For securing peace across the void This is why we're here This is our purpose The Unison: Civil discourse has never failed Until “they” lost reason Contrasting views will sow distrust The rift growing wider “...the effects of change on humans, both the individual and a societal level, and that has mattered very fundamentally since the Industrial Revolution. Until the Industrial Revolution, people tended to die in the society, the same society, as they were born into." The Stablists: There’s merit on both ends Both have done wrong Let’s table this discussion The Interventionists & The Naturalists: Until...? The Unison: History’s on our side When we can agree Let us dispense with our pride And then we’ll be free
5.
Echo Chamber 04:09
The Naturalists: Don’t expect me to perceive the way you do Don’t expect me to know in the way you knew Unity does not mean that we should conform It obfuscates the diversity with which we are born The Stablists: Power corrupts even those who have gone without The Naturalists: Can’t mistake my silence for complacency I don’t want to do my part just so you can see The Stablists: I feared this day would come Blinded by a singular narrative We must include the sum Opinions taken to be objective Freedom of thought Let’s not lose who we are The Interventionists: Grant me freedom to express what’s on my mind Grant me freedom to defend the people who you bind You are no better than those who you would denounce Just because you don’t agree does not mean you renounce The Stablists: This is not the time to undo our progress This is not the hour to fan flames of unrest The Naturalists & the Interventionists: Don’t expect me to perceive the way you do Don’t expect me to know in the way you knew Unity does not mean that we should conform It obfuscates the diversity with which we are born The Stablists: We can all work towards the same end
6.
The Interventionists: Unsuspecting flock They sleep their days away They'll no longer mock Once they see things our way Let the battle commence If only out of spite Even though they're kin They must be shown who's right As proven with our might The Naturalists: The use of violence The last resort for fools A broken promise Had seemed so miniscule The Chaos: Watch how quickly they fall So much for their resolve The Interventionists: They have forced our hand Diluted who we are Together we must stand Enter the abattoir The Naturalists: How can we help the rest When we can’t help ourselves? The use of violence Was never an option Interdependence Had kept the rage within The Interventionists: Death to those who would stand by The Naturalists: The use of violence The last resort for fools A broken promise Had seemed so miniscule "Why do we always assume that if there is life on another planet that it's superior?" "It's hard to imagine the reverse."
7.
Paradigm 02:34
The Narration: Victors emerge from the ashes Of their fallen brethren who could Never understand this concept: Selflessness is beneficial The Interventionists: Instill the paradigm Our path is clear We bring you paradise Utopia will be yours The Chaos: Conflict has fortified Peace was already tried The Narration: Now free to introduce their wealth Of all the knowledge they have gained All can enjoy eternity Except those who hinder progress The Interventionists: Instill the paradigm Our path is clear We bring you paradise Utopia will be yours The Chaos: This virus seeks new hosts…
8.
Distant 06:33
The Interventionists: It's not thought but emotion That shall guide our devotion Our just cause to end all pain All shall stand to grow and gain The Others: Though we can't deny That we've come so far Yet we can't decry That you've cut a scar We'll never know If we'd have made it on our own You can justify That’d we’d stand no chance You can rectify That we might advance Our choice is gone Perhaps we'd write a better song The Interventionists: Don’t feel bad because we came There’s no cause to feel ashamed It can’t hurt you to accept help Know we only would wish you well The Others: There is no divine You are mortal after all There is no benign One of us must bear the fall It all must end Even you must not pretend The Narration: It came to pass over the course of thousands of years that all fellow sapients would be forged in their image. Prosperity reigned. The universe was a warm, safe place. But what of creativity? What of imagination? The Unison: Why do you resist? Those left behind might have resolved their ire The Others: When the spark has died Only the ashes remain When ours worlds collide We are told not to complain The Unison: Now we’ve absorbed everything that’s living All that is left is to wait for the answers Haunted by ghosts who live on in memory Someday we’ll know what it’s like to die
9.
Legacy 05:16
The Unison: One final mystery unresolved Nothing has changed; we’re back to square one No coming back from this ultimate dive Into the void we go This too shall pass Why do we hold on We’re responsible For ensuring death will never come This is why we stay There must be a reason for it all Looming, hollow, formless… Some will go by choice Others remain We’re responsible For preserving our long legacy It’s an empty gesture We can’t stop it from being erased But it’s okay because we loved Which is better than nothing at all We’re at the mercy of our spatial cage Who’s to say we won’t grow beyond? I feel the panic coming back again What kind of force would let this be? I can’t cheat death All must come to an end It’s now or later for me Universal entropy Spiral down Lunacy Can’t compute Game over *unintelligible primal noises*

about

Voices:

The Narration - A neutral by-stander, witness to the events
The Unison - Our society who are of one voice
The Interventionists - The we who would hasten the evolution of fellow sapients
The Naturalists - The we who would not impose ourselves upon fellow sapients
The Chaos - The we who would divide us
The Stablists - The we who would compromise at the cost of progress

The Narration:
A society that has achieved utopia-like conditions. Post-scarcity. Practical immortality. Literally nothing left to achieve for this civilization.

Was that the point? To get to this state and just…enjoy it? Or has life lost meaning now that struggle and suffering have ceased? Has life lost its preciousness now that it can continue as long as the universe continues to exist?

The physical reality of the universe is now understood, but only one mystery remains. What happens after? After the death of an individual consciousness, or after the death of our reality. Is there even an after? On a related note, was there a before?
